Scooters can be categorized on the basis of the wheel model, operations mode and function. The various types of scooters include folding scooter, executive scooter, freestyle scooter, skateboard scooter, three wheel folding scooter, gas motorized scooter and electric motorized scooter. A folding scooter, as the name implies, can be folded to the size of a suitcase after use.

Though an executive scooter is large in size, they can be folded just like the standard folding scooter.

The skateboard scooter is one the distinguished scooters in the market. This scooter is a culmination of a four wheeled skateboard and a scooter. Skateboard scooters come with a fixed handlebar, and are steered just like standard skateboards. Unlike other scooters, skateboard scooters have smaller wheels, and are typically slower. The skateboard scooter is suitable for trick riding. Another type of scooter used for trick riding is the freestyle scooter. The most attractive feature of the freestyle scooter is the kick tail, a part of the deck extending upward over the back wheel.

The three wheel folding scooter is another prominent type of scooter. As the name implies, this is a three wheeled scooter that can be folded after use. It has one wheel in front and two wheels at the back, and the wheels are 100mm in-line skate style. Three wheel folding scooters are a combination of the folding scooter and the skateboard scooter. Thus, they include some of the features of both.

Unlike other types of scooters, gas powered motorized scooters and electric powered motorized scooters are more powerful and easy to drive. Because of these features, these two types of scooters are widely used for on and off road long distance and short distance drives. But, gas powered motorized scooters are not permitted in some areas. So, it is always recommended to check the rules and regulations before purchase.

Cheap Scooters

Cheap scooters are available in all scooter types including electric, motor and gas. These scooters are most often vehicles of inferior quality or defective ones. They may come with machine parts of poor quality. Scooters at much cheaper rates may have plastic rear drive gears instead of metal gears. They may not have any support from manufacturers or dealers to replace machine parts. The manufacturers do not even provide scooter related services to customers.

Cheap scooters may sometimes frustrate users with frequent breakdowns. These scooters are expensive to repair every now and then. At the same time, cheap scooters are dangerous, too. So, it is necessary to follow certain instructions for purchasing such scooters. First, the buyer must check whether the scooters were bought from reputable dealers. Secondly, they should be brand name scooters, and not off brand, no brand or clone models.

In addition, it is necessary to take scooters to a nearby scooter store for a complete service, if possible. This allows the buyer to know about the working condition and the machine parts. In most cases, customers need to buy only certain machine parts from cheap scooters for their used scooters. This helps used scooters to remain in better working condition for some more time.

There are certain points to consider regarding the price. The primary thing is to know the original price for cheap scooters and the amount the dealer charges. This purely depends on the ability of customers. One way to obtain this information is to enquire about price details as a seller for the scooter. Secondly, you should know the amount paid by individuals for that particular model. This gives a clear picture about the amount to be paid for cheap scooters. Otherwise, it is likely that you will be cheated.

Cheap scooters are obtained at about half or even less price, compared to good and quality scooters. Quality 50cc scooters cost $1600 or more. The cost is below $1000 for cheap ones of the same kind. In addition, warranty options for cheap scooters are one or two months. But better quality scooters have at least one year warranty.

Touring Rome on a Vespa


ROME — When it comes to looking classy on a Vespa in Rome, no one did it better than Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in “Roman Holiday.” The classic film helped put Vespa on the map (for Americans) and gave the little scooters a romantic and stylish air, as well as permanent place in popular culture.







Sergio Caggia, founder of Nerone Tours came up with the idea of organizing Vespa tours of Rome after spending nearly a decade giving private walking tours of the city (called “Rome Made to Measure”).

Mr. Caggia explained it was a conversation with a friend, who rented scooters to tourists that led him to the idea of incorporating classic Vespas and vintage cars into his own tour operations. A fan of classic cars and scooters himself, Mr. Caggia used his connections with local enthusiast clubs to find owners willing to use their vehicles to tote tourists throughout Rome.

Valerio and Stefano — the Vespa owners/drivers who would guide me and my friend, Matthew, on our tour — arrived outside our hotel promptly at 9:00 a.m. Suffering the after-effects of the previous night’s festivities, I put on a helmet and tried my best to ignore a pounding headache while hopping aboard Stefano’s 1977 Vespa.

Instinctively, I looked for handlebars, a seatbelt, or anything to grab hold of during the three-hour tour. This would be my first time on a scooter or motorcycle, and it suddenly hit me that I was about to be human cargo in Rome’s notoriously chaotic traffic.

Thankfully, Stefano took mercy on me. Zipping through traffic and between cars, the pace was fast but not frightening. Bumpy cobblestone streets became my biggest enemy. But the butterflies in my stomach eventually slowed their fluttering, as we wound our way along the banks of the Tiber River, past the remains of the Baths of Caracalla and along the Appian Way.

Frequent stops for photos at tourist hotspots, like the Coliseum and atop the Janiculum, Rome’s highest hill, provided a nice break from dicing with traffic. An extra stop for industrial-strength espresso proved the perfect remedy for my headache.

These pauses often led to amusing encounters. No sooner would we stop than camera-toting tourists would rush over for a picture. A Vespa is hardly what you’d call a rare sight in Rome. But that never seemed to matter, especially to a group of eager young French students, who insisted we pose next to the scooters in front of St. Peter’s Basilica.

The price of Vespa fame doesn’t come cheap. For two people, a three-hour tour will cost around $300. Sergio Caggia said that a similar itinerary in a classic car like a tiny Fiat 500 from the 1960s would cost roughly $400, significantly more than you’d pay for the typical double-decker bus tours. But if you want to have fun while feeling impossibly cool, it’s hard to top the view of Rome from a vintage Vespa.

Riding the Vespa S





The ride, organized by Vespa’s American branch, took a group of journalists and a couple of local scooter enthusiasts almost There are some other cosmetic flourishes on the S: the headlamp and mirrors are rectangular rather than round, recalling earlier models; and the one-up seat offers a bit of piping that appealed to at least one vintage Vespa rider I spoke to. On the rear of the front cowl, the S has two cupholder-sized metal bins — capable of holding a pair of gloves or about as much stuff as will fit into your pants pockets. Initially, the most noticeable difference is the absence of the forward storage compartment.

The most significant differences between the S and the LX are stylistic — the S is a bit leaner, intended to recall 1960s models such as the Vespa Special and the Vespa Primavera. Indeed, the two scooters share many of the same specs. The S, which is closely related to Vespa’s LX, is powered by a 150cc air-cooled four-stroke. After touring through Manhattan and Brooklyn on a group ride for journalists, though, I found myself persuaded that scooters are extremely useful for basic city transport — at least when the weather is cooperative. So even though I’m a fan of almost anything with a motor and two wheels, I was a bit skeptical about venturing onto the city streets aboard the Vespa S. Getting through a traffic jam on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway is a game of inches. I’ve always thought that driving in New York City is a bit like a game of touch football between the Jets and the Giants — you’re always seconds away from a painful collision, but for the most part you don’t get clobbered.

Piaggio showed the Vespa GTS 300 Super:







The company said it’s the fastest Vespa in its American lineup. The GTS 300 Super is the bigger brother of the company’s GTS 250, with a slightly larger engine and some racier styling. Paolo Timoni, the chief executive of Piaggio Group Americas, said he expected Vespa’s American sales to improve in 2009, even after a year of substantial growth in the United States. Through the first three quarters of 2008, American sales of Piaggio’s scooters (which include Vespas as well as Piaggio-branded models) were up 61 percent, Mr. Timoni said. The GTS 300 Super will go on sale in March at a suggested price of $6,199.

The New Vetrix







vectrix Corporation, the financially troubled manufacturer of electric scooters, has declared chapter 11 bankruptcy and has agreed to sell the majority of its assets, free of debt, to a new company, appropriately called “New Vectrix LLC.” The move comes after the company cut the majority of its workforce and failed to secure major investment or a government loan or bailout. Vectrix is said to be continuing production of the VX-1 electric scooter at its facility in Poland during all this, but could not be reached for comment. A press release follows the jump, it kind of boggles the mind.

The Vectrix, a new all-electric motor scooter, is getting some press in the Bay Area, where it's being billed as an environmentally-friendly commuting vehicle. The bike, which plugs into a wall outlet and recharges in two to three hours, has a top speed of 60 miles per hour, and decent range: A Vectrix executive estimates that it will go for 60 miles at about 45 miles per hour.

These all-electric, no-emissions scooter are already a staple in some European cities, but it might take a lower price tag for the Vetrix to catch on here. At $11,000, the bike is far more expensive than similarly-size, gas-powered models. So, while you're saving serious money at the pump - it costs pennies per gallon - that initial price forces you to play catch-up. Still, if a company's going to try to sell people an $11,000 all-electric scooter, San Francisco's probably the place to do it.—Gregory Mone
